Description

The Redman Van and Storage Company Building is part of the Sugar House neighborhood about four-and-a-half miles southeast of central Salt Lake City. Construction was begun in 1945 and needed approval by the Civilian Production Administration (recently transitioned from the War Production Board) (New Redman warehouse). When built, Redman Van and Storage fronted the national Lincoln Highway providing transport between nationwide destinations and the fast-growing southeastern SLC residential areas.

The five-story warehouse was a distinctive landmark because of its height among surrounding one- and two-story commercial structures and the large, visible “Redman” freestanding letter signs above the roof on both the east and west sides (National Park).

The owner’s aim was to combine architectural beauty with the latest in storage safety features (Redman Co to hold). The Art Moderne style could be seen in the smooth stucco-covered wall surfaces on the front elevation; flat roof; long, vertical glass block windows; curved window wall areas; and narrow plain cornice. There were three office spaces on the first floor, each with its own entrance to the sidewalk. Curved glass block walls framed the central inset entrance door. The interior space was typical of a warehouse with open space punctuated by supporting concrete flared-top or “mushroom” columns (National Park).

Safety was paramount, since fire was a constant concern in warehousing: the building access to each of the upper four floors was only through a south-facing metal fire door.

In 1980 the building was sold to Victor Ayers who leased space to various businesses, one of which provided movie props and production facilities. That lessee changed the name of his company to “Redman Movies and Stories” and subsequently altered the historic signs on the building and roof to match the new name. They now read “Redman Movies” on the east side and “Redman Stories” on the west side, but the historic “Redman” portion of the signs was retained, and the signs still appear as they did historically (National Park).

In 2003 – when the building was put on the National Register of Historic Places – the building was in good shape although there were several broken windowpanes and glass blocks. At that time, the Redman Van and Storage Company Building retained its historic integrity and was a contributing element in the Sugar House historic fabric (National Park).

Only two years later (2005), the building was transformed into condominiums and was soon delisted from the National Register of Historic Places in February 2007 (National Park).

Research Notes

This is one of grandpa’s buildings that I remember well: it was a distinctive Sugar House landmark right next to Harman’s Fried Chicken on 2100 East. Though like most of the Ashton & Evans’ buildings with which I was familiar, I wasn’t really aware that grandpa was involved in the design. We just didn’t talk much about grandpa’s work when we were young!
